Support for logographic languages [Cloud]
Smart Terms for Confluence provides enhanced support for logographic languages, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
When a new term is added in one of these languages, the app attempts to identify the corresponding language and assigns a default index letter to be used to organize the terms within the glossary.
The default index letter is derived using a language-specific mapping strategy:
- For Korean characters, the default index letter is derived from the initial consonant of the Hangul syllable block.
- For traditional Chinese characters, the default index letter reflects the number of strokes required to write the first character.
For simplified Chinese characters, a corresponding Latin letter may be inferred based on Pinyin transliteration.
- For Japanese characters, the default index letter is assigned based on the Gojūon order.
For Japanese terms, if the term title includes only Chinese characters without Hiragana or Katakana characters, then Smart Terms will assume that the term is in Chinese and will apply the previously mentioned rules to determine the default index letter.
Adding the Hiragana spelling between brackets at the end of the term will help the app identify the term language correctly and allow it to generate the accurate index letter.
If language or script detection is uncertain, for example when using mixed-script entries or rare and special characters, Smart Terms will register the first character as the default index letter.
If the suggested index letter is not appropriate, users have the flexibility to manually adjust it to better reflect their preferred indexing structure with the help of the custom letter feature.
For previously created glossaries that have incorrect default index letters, you can regenerate the index letter for all terms in the space glossary using the following steps:
- Export the space glossary
- Import the exported file in the same space with the following options:
- Enable the option Update existing terms
- Keep the option Reset existing terms media disabled to preserve your media files
