Learning capsules
In Smart Courses, a course can be composed of different capsules. Various content types are available for users to create a rich learning material.
Confluence page
You can search for Confluence pages to be used in the course. You can customize the Confluence page capsule:
- Insert Confluence page: Search or copy-paste links of pages, headings and anchors into a Confluence page capsule.
- Create a Confluence page [Cloud]: Create a new published Confluence page from the course editor and insert it as a capsule.
- Display page link: Whether to display or not the page link in the player
- Page description: Displays a Confluence page description
- Anchor: By selecting the “Anchor option” and adding the anchor macro name to the Confluence page capsule, course attendees can start navigating the page from that specific anchor.
First, you need to define an Anchor within the target Confluence page. Then, in the course, provide the Anchor name, which needs to comply with the native Confluence rulepagename-anchorname
. - Minimum reading time: displays a countdown while reading the capsule to freeze navigation
- Lite display mode [On-premise]: This mode guarantees proper and fast page display. It does not support comments, likes, and labels display.
- Hide comments, likes, and labels [On-premise]: Display or not the footer elements of the page (comments, likes, and labels)
To display a Confluence page capsule, an attendee must have permission to view the page. Make sure that pages are accessible to course attendees; otherwise, the page will not be displayed.
Image
There are two ways to add Images to a course:
- Attachment: Upload an image file. The accepted formats are: (png, jpg, jpeg, gif, bmp, webp, svg)
- Link: Use an image link from the Internet or your Intranet
Note that the maximum allowed size of attachments is defined by Confluence administrator.
Dimensions: Smart Courses uses a responsive image display mechanism. High-resolution images are preferred for better course quality.
Secured Links: Non-HTTPS image links may not display.
You can customize the Image capsule:
- Display media link: whether to display or not the media link in the player
- Image description: displays an image description
- Minimum reading time: displays a countdown while reading the capsule to freeze navigation
Video & Audio
There are two ways to add a video or audio to a course.
- Attachment: Upload a media file. The accepted formats are: (mp4, mp3, WebM, m4v, ogv, ogg, wav)
- Link: Using a link from the Internet or your Intranet, Smart Courses automatically converts links from:
- YouTube
- Vimeo
- SoundCloud
- Streamable
- Vidyard
- Wistia
- Twitch
- DailyMotion
- Loom
- Google Drive
- Dropbox
Note that the maximum allowed size of attachments is defined by Confluence administrator.
Secured Links: links from non HTTPS domains may not display.
Options you can use to customize the capsule display:

- Autoplay: Autoplay the video or audio automatically when the capsule is displayed
- Media description: displays a video/audio description

Text
Smart Courses offers a WYSIWYG editor to quickly and easily create rich content.
- Minimum reading time: displays a countdown while reading the capsule to freeze navigation
- Prevent opening links in new tabs: When selected, links will open in the same tab.
Using the Confluence page capsule is preferred when creating complex pages to take full advantage of Confluence page editor.
Quiz Question
Smart Courses offers a powerful and handy module to create Questions to challenge and test attendees.
Different modes and types of questions are available:

Options can be used to customize the capsule display:
- Question details: Displays a question description; use this option to give more details about the asked question.
- Media: Allows you to integrate an image, video, or audio into the question. The same rules for image and media capsules apply.
- Custom right answer message: Displays a customized text when the answer is right.
- Custom wrong answer message: Displays a customized text when the answer is wrong.
- Randomize choices: Applies a random display of choices order every time the question is reloaded.
- Time limit: Displays a countdown. If the time limit expires while the attendee has not responded yet, the submit button is automatically triggered, and the selected responses are sent automatically.
- Case sensitive: Only match results that have the exact same uppercase and lowercase characters.
- Diacritics sensitive: If diacritic characters should be ignored. For example, "döner" would not match "doner".
Custom right and wrong messages are only displayed if the Hide questions results option is disabled.
By default, the randomized choices option is applied to matching and ordering questions.
The essay question requires validation to mark a session as Pass or Fail.
Web page
This capsule is used to display web pages in the course (Internet or Intranet). Smart Courses automatically converts given links to iframes.
Options can be used to customize the capsule display:
- Display page link: whether to display or not the page link in the player
- Description: displays a webpage description
- Minimum reading time: displays a countdown while reading the capsule to freeze navigation
Note that the display of external pages may be blocked by their hosting domains. Make sure the web pages are correctly displayed before publishing the course.
Embed
The Embed capsule is used to display an HTML code in the course.
Options you can use to customize the capsule display:
- Description: displays a description for HTML codes
- Minimum reading time: displays a countdown while reading the capsule to freeze navigation
Smart Courses applies strict safety rules for this type of capsule. Embedding javascript scripts directly into the code may not work. Make sure the HTML code is correctly displayed before publishing the course.

- Attachment: Upload a PDF file
- Link: Use a link from the Internet or Intranet
Note that the maximum allowed size of attachments is defined by Confluence administrator.

Options you can use to customize the capsule display:
- PDF description: displays a PDF file description
- Minimum reading time: displays a countdown while reading the capsule to freeze navigation
You can edit the PDF file and download it. The changes will not be saved in the course attachments and will not be visible to the course attendees.
Confluence Question integration
This type of capsule is only available if the Confluence Questions app is installed and activated.
You can search for the required "Confluence questions" to be quickly incorporated into the course.
Options you can use to customize the capsule display:
- Minimum reading time: displays a countdown while reading the capsule to block navigation to the next capsule/section.
To display a Confluence question capsule, an attendee must have permission to view the question. Make sure the page is accessible to course users; otherwise, the page cannot display.
Import capsules and sections
1. Import capsules:
Use this button to import capsules from other courses.
If the imported capsules contain attachments, they will be automatically copied in the target course.
2. Import sections:
Use this button to import whole sections from other courses.
You can only import sections and capsules from published courses that you have permission to edit, created within the same space.
